What makes Smart Media a leading annual report company?

Smart Media was incorporated in 1994 and has focused exclusively on corporate reporting for over 30 years. We are not a general communications agency; we are a specialist annual report company dedicated to strengthening clarity, connectivity, and investor confidence.

We have consistently been at the forefront of reporting innovation, including:

  • Producing one of the world’s first native HTML annual reports in 1999
  • Introducing reporting on intangibles such as customer capital, human resource accounting and business impact in the early 2000s
  • Preparing one of the earliest integrated annual reports in 2012
  • Delivering the first video annual report in 2013
  • Amplifying annual reports globally via social media in 2017
  • Launching a digital AI-powered Annual Report Reading Assistant in 2023
  • Delivering a fully digital-first annual report architecture in 2024

Our work has been recognised at the highest level internationally, including being ranked No. 1 globally on three occasions through the Platinum Achievement Award at the International ARC Awards in NYC, one of the world’s longest-standing and most rigorously benchmarked awards programmes for annual reporting excellence.

With more than 70 specialised professionals in-house, spanning advisory, writing, research, design, data, production, and digital development. We operate as a fully integrated annual report partner across sectors and jurisdictions.

What does a corporate reporting advisory firm do?

A corporate reporting advisory firm strengthens the clarity, connectivity and credibility of a company’s disclosures while operating fully within its established governance and reporting framework.

At Smart Media, our methodology supports the evolution of the Annual Report through three connected stages:

1. Double Materiality and Reputation-Informed Assessment

We build on a company’s existing materiality processes to conduct an auditable Double Materiality Assessment covering:

  • Financial materiality - sustainability-related risks and opportunities that influence enterprise value, aligned with IFRS S1 and S2 and relevant jurisdictional requirements such as ESRS.
  • Impact materiality - the company’s most significant impacts on the economy, environment and society, aligned with GRI Standards and local jurisdictional requirements such as ESRS

Where available, insights from external perception studies are incorporated to highlight alignment or divergence between stakeholder expectations and internal priorities.

2. Disclosure Mapping and Gap Analysis

We develop a structured disclosure checklist and conduct a gap analysis to evaluate readiness, connectivity, and consistency across financial, sustainability and governance disclosures.

3. Annual Report Development (Base Year)

We support disciplined development of the Annual Report, strengthening narrative structure, strategic clarity, and connectivity, while operating fully within the company’s governance, assurance and approval frameworks.

This advisory foundation underpins our work in integrated reporting, sustainability reporting and digital-first reporting.

Do you provide integrated reporting consultancy?

Yes. We prepared one of the earliest integrated annual reports in 2012 and have since supported more than 150 organisations globally in transitioning toward integrated reporting.

Recent landmark engagements include:

  • SABIC, one of the world’s leading diversified petrochemical companies, where we supported a structured three-year transformation toward fully integrated reporting, strengthening connectivity between strategy, capital allocation, sustainability, and financial performance.
  • Almarai Company, the world’s largest vertically integrated dairy company and the largest food and beverage manufacturing and distribution company in MENA, which will publish its first integrated annual report in March 2026 following a structured migration process.

In 2014, we published The Smart Integrated Reporting Methodology, a practical guide that helped report preparers operationalise the Integrated Reporting Framework. Following its fifth edition in 2023, this evolved into the InsightBook on the Smart Annual Report (2025), supporting both implementation of the Integrated Reporting Framework and migration to digital-first reporting. This publication is available for download from our website.

Since 2019, Smart Media has been an accredited Training Partner for the IFRS Integrated Reporting Framework.

Notably, the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) itself commissioned Smart Media to prepare its own Integrated Reports for four consecutive years from 2017 to 2020, prior to its merger with the IFRS Foundation. This engagement required direct alignment with the architects of the framework and reflects the confidence placed in our technical and methodological expertise.

Our integrated reporting advisory strengthens alignment between strategy, capital allocation, performance, risk, and sustainability, embedding integrated thinking into the core of corporate reporting.

Do you provide sustainability and ESG reporting consultancy?

Yes. Sustainability reporting has been embedded in our work for more than two decades.

As early as 2003, we introduced business impact reporting within the Annual Report structure. We were early adopters of the GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, supporting organisations from the original G1 Guidelines in 2000 through to the transition to the GRI Standards in 2016.

Throughout this evolution, we consistently advocated integrating sustainability into the main Annual Report rather than treating it as a disconnected or standalone exercise. Our position has always been that sustainability disclosures should sit alongside strategy, risk, and financial performance, not apart from them.

This long-standing integrated approach has positioned us well for today’s convergence of financial and sustainability reporting under frameworks such as IFRS Sustainability (ISSB) and jurisdictional standards including ESRS. What is now described as “connectivity” and “integrated thinking” has been embedded in our methodology for over two decades.

Since 2009, we have guided organisations on measuring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, also known as carbon emissions, using the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.

Smart Media became a Net Zero company in 2011 across all three scopes of emissions.

Our sustainability and ESG advisory integrate:

  • Double materiality assessment
  • Disclosure mapping and gap analysis
  • GHG measurement and reporting
  • Alignment with IFRS Sustainability (ISSB), GRI Standards, and local jurisdictional standards such as ESRS
  • Connectivity between sustainability performance, financial impact and strategy

Are you a digital annual report company?

Yes. Smart Media is perhaps best described as the world’s first fully digital annual report company.

Our digital leadership spans more than two decades, including native HTML reporting in 1999 and a fully digital-first annual report architecture in 2024.

Our model is built around a single digital source of truth, deployed seamlessly across:

  • Native HTML online reports
  • Interactive PDFs
  • Structured and tagged outputs
  • Print-ready formats

We combine people-led advisory with platform-enabled precision, ensuring structured digital integrity without losing professional judgement.

What is a digital-first annual report?

A digital-first annual report is created natively in a structured digital environment; not converted from print or PDF. The digital version is the primary source, and all other formats are generated from it.

This ensures:

  • Clean HTML architecture
  • Accessibility compliance
  • AI-readability
  • Structured tagging integrity
  • Seamless multi-device usability

Smart Media formalised its digital-first architecture in 2024, building on decades of native HTML expertise.

What is a native HTML annual report?

A native HTML annual report is built directly in structured HTML code rather than converted from a PDF.

Native HTML enables:

  • Proper semantic tagging
  • Logical heading hierarchies
  • Clean reading order
  • Improved search and AI parsing
  • Better accessibility alignment

PDF-to-HTML conversions often produce fragmented code that reduces reliability for search engines, AI systems and assistive technologies.

Smart Media has worked in native HTML environments since 1999.

What is an accessible annual report?

An accessible annual report ensures all stakeholders, including those using assistive technologies, can access, navigate and understand its content.

Accessibility enhances:

  • Inclusion
  • Mobile usability
  • Regulatory alignment
  • Search visibility
  • AI-readability

Because our reports are built from structured digital architecture, accessibility is embedded at source.

What does WCAG compliant annual reporting mean?

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) define international standards for digital accessibility.

A WCAG-aligned annual report ensures content is:

  • Perceivable
  • Operable
  • Understandable
  • Robust

Our structured production environment enables alignment across both HTML and the PDF-twin output.

What is an AI-readable annual report?

An AI-readable annual report is structured so that search engines and large language models (LLMs) can interpret disclosures accurately.

AI performs best when content is:

  • Structured in clean HTML
  • Tagged semantically
  • Organised hierarchically
  • Supported by structured data such as iXBRL where required

In 2023, Smart Media introduced an AI-Powered Annual Report Reading Assistant, reinforcing our commitment to machine-readable corporate reporting.

What is AI-friendly corporate reporting?

AI-friendly corporate reporting ensures disclosures are structured, accessible and digitally optimised for interpretation by intelligent systems.

This improves:

  • Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)
  • Search visibility
  • Data accuracy
  • Investor research efficiency

AI-friendly reporting is a natural outcome of digital-first, structured production.

What is structured annual report production?

Structured production aligns narrative, data, tagging and design within a disciplined digital framework.

It ensures:

  • Connectivity between strategy, risk, and sustainability
  • Consistent hierarchies
  • Logical cross-referencing
  • Regulatory durability

Structured production is the foundation of digital-first reporting.

What does multi-format reporting from a single digital source mean?

All outputs: HTML, PDF, print-ready and tagged formats, originate from one structured digital master environment.

This eliminates:

  • Version inconsistencies
  • Compliance misalignment
  • Disconnected design files

PDF becomes an output - not the source.

Digital annual report vs PDF: what is the difference?

A PDF annual report is a fixed-layout format primarily designed to replicate print. It remains valuable for formal distribution.

However, PDF-only reporting limits accessibility, AI-readability, and search visibility.

A digital annual report built in native HTML enables structured navigation, responsive design, and improved discoverability.

At Smart Media, we do not replace PDF; we reposition it as the PDF-twin of the native HTML report.

The PDF becomes one of several outputs generated from a digital-first structured core, ensuring consistency and structural integrity across all formats.

How does your digital delivery model work?

We operate through a secure, structured collaboration environment that provides:

  • Real-time version control
  • Audit trails
  • Controlled access
  • Structured review workflows

This reduces fragmentation and shortens review cycles while preserving a high-touch advisory relationship.

How do you manage data hosting and security?

Our infrastructure is hosted on enterprise-grade cloud platforms with region-specific deployment options where required.

We maintain:

  • Encrypted environments
  • Controlled user permissions
  • Secure authentication
  • Resilient hosting architecture

Data integrity and confidentiality are embedded throughout the reporting lifecycle.

Can you manage multilingual or multi-market reporting?

Yes. Our native HTML architecture supports multilingual reporting, dual-language layouts, and region-specific disclosure variations, all generated from a single structured digital core.

What types of reports do you produce?

We produce:

  • Annual Reports
  • Integrated Reports
  • Sustainability and ESG Reports
  • Climate and impact disclosures
  • Governance and risk reports
  • Digital-first HTML reports with their PDF-twins
  • Structured and tagged outputs
  • Print-ready editions

All are delivered through a digital-first, structured production model.
